This collection of solo works for marimba charts the diverse compositional styles in contemporary Portuguese music.

Pedro Carneiro is one of the worlds foremost virtuoso marimba players. His artistry is well known to audiences throughout the globe. Since 1999, he has been collecting and commissioning works for marimba and percussion from several Portuguese composers and discovered an immense wealth and creativity to be explored by developing artistic partnerships with these exciting composers.

This recording contains six contrasting works for solo marimba, one of the oldest (and at the same time, one of the newest) musical instruments. The ancestors of the modern marimba appear in several cultures in Africa and Asia - but it was it’s long journey through Central and South America (on the slaves’ baggage) that took the instrument to the north American shores, where the modern version of the instrument was developed into the 20th Century.
