Description

Deborah Calland studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has since pursued a multi-faceted career as a trumpet soloist, editor and writer on music. She has a special interest in contemporary music and has played an active role in increasing the repertoire for her instrument.

Ms Calland writes, “Brilliant and powerful, with a wide expressive and dynamic range, the trumpet and organ have many qualities in common and would seem to be ideal partners. So it is surprising that, in the past, few composers have considered pairing the instruments. It is this paucity of existing repertoire, together with a keen interest in contemporary music that led me to seek out new pieces from some very different composers whose compositions I had heard and admired. Five works from my growing collection of commissions receive their world premiere recordings on this disc which, I hope, also serves to celebrate the abundance of talent in British composition today. ”
In addition to the works recorded here, Ms Calland has also had compositions written for her by the following: Einojuhani Rautavaara, Hugh Wood, Sally Beamish, Bent Lorentzen and Jonathan Dove.
Among her publications are Top Brass, Onstage Brass (both Stainer & Bell) and Trumpet Allsorts (Faber), which have all been represented on the Associated Board and Trinity syllabuses.
